Collins's longest novel, published in and dedicated to John Forster. The story spans two generations of the Armadale families and the complex plot combines several of Collins's favourite themes, including the supernatural, identity, murder and detection. Armadale is one of Wilkie Collins’s finest concoctions—up there, in my view (and, indeed, www.doorway.ru’s), with his more famous The Moonstone and The Woman in White/5. · Armadale By Wilkie Collins. William Wilkie Collins (8 January - 23 September ) was an English novelist, playwright, and short story writer. His best-known works are The Woman in White (), No Name (), Armadale (), and The Moonstone (), considered the first modern English detective novel. Armadale () by Wilkie Collins is a 19th-century semi-epistolary novel. Some chapters consist of letters between the various characters, while other chapters record the events as the characters perceive them. The novel has a convoluted plot about two distant cousins both named Allan Armadale. The father of one had murdered the father of the other (the two fathers are also named Allan Armadale). (Portrait of Wilkie Collins by Napoleon Sarony, ; found here) There are five Allan Armadales. Yes five! Fortunately, this is not as confusing as it might be. Allan Armadale (I) has a son, also named Allan Armadale (II), who is a reprobate.
Armadale by Wilkie Collins - Free Ebook. Project Gutenberg. 66, free ebooks. 55 by Wilkie Collins. First serialised in –66, Armadale is a wonderful chunk of nineteenth-century fiction which is usually classed, alongside Lady Audley’s Secret et al., as sensationalist, but in my opinion is more of a gothic novel. It contains everything you would wish to find in such a book: intrigue, murder, deception, fraud, a secret diary and a wicked lady whom you rather hope will triumph in her criminal ways though you fear she won’t. Can a dream foretell the future? That is one of the central questions of Armadale, one of Wilkie Collins’ lesser-known novels. But even though it is not as famous as The Woman in White or The Moonstone, it is still written with the psychological awareness and piercing character studies of the best of Collins’ work.
