It is now very difficult to find (except in French translation!) which is both sad and somewhat surprising, as it is really a very good novel. They could be set in Soho ('Adrift in Soho' by Colin Wilson) or Kennington ('London Belongs To Me' by Norman Collins), Bloomsbury ('Scamp' by Roland Camberton) or Bethnal Geen ('King Dido' by Alexander Baron). I love some of these books dearly (all of the above) while others I find unforgivably bad (er, 'Saturday' by Ian. Scamp had been out of print for many years when it was rediscovered by Iain Sinclair. Roland Camberton only wrote two books and died at the age of 44, feeling that he had failed at his cherished ambition of being a writer. Scamp is semi-autobiographical and is a wonderful evocation of a shabby, post-Second World War London of seedy cafes, pubs.


Roland Camberton () was a British writer whose real name was Henry Cohen, though his family also knew him as Harry. He won the Somerset Maugham Award, given to authors under the age of 35, for his novel Scamp. The following year, he published Rain on the Pavements.
