Dogs were ideal for shoe advertisements because they would often take a person's eye down to foot level. In the renowned image "New York City, (Dog Legs)," perhaps second and third looks are needed. To achieve this effect Erwitt had to position himself in a very specific way: down low, to the eye level of the chihuahua, and cropping off the larger dog both to the left (to remove the hind legs) and above (to remove the upper body and head) to disguise its canine nature and maximise the human impersonation.
